Sky Scanner
One of the first places I look when booking a trip is Sky Scanner. It is a great tool to find what routes you can take and also to find the best price. When I first start searching for where I want to go, I use the “everywhere” tool.
Type in your departure airport in “From” and in “To” search box, enter everywhere. Then enter your dates and the number of travellers and hit search! This will then load all the available destinations in order of cost from lowest to highest. It’s great if your open to where you want to go and want a cheap getaway. I did this for a trip to Dublin, you can read about it here and we had the best trip.
If you know exactly where you want to go, you can enter your search into Sky Scanner. Rather than put your closest airport in as where you want to fly from, try searching for all airports. For example, I usually fly from Manchester, but I often enter “United Kingdom” as the departure location. It then shows the prices from each UK airport. I often find a lot of flights are cheaper flying from London, especially when it’s a long haul destination. Once I know my options, I weigh up the cost of travelling from Manchester to London to see if it still works out cheaper. I did this for flights to Miami in August 2022 and saved myself £450!
Google Flights
Just like sky scanner, google flights is another tool to search for flights and all the available options. Whilst you can’t search all destinations at once like sky scanner, you can do a lot more with google flights. Google flights allows you too see price history for what your searching for to see peak times. It will also show a calendar which shows prices based on a traffic light system. Green being the cheapest days to fly and red being the most expensive. You can also track prices so that you receive email alerts when prices change. A perfect way to keep on eye on prices without having to remember to constantly look yourself.
Airline Points & Loyalty Programs
Sites like google flights and sky scanner may be your go to for the best deals. However, it might not always be the best option. Another option for great deals is to stay loyal to an airline. If you tend to fly with the same airline, look into their loyalty programs or credit card options. Joining a loyalty program or investing in an airline credit card allows you to build up points and vouchers. You can then use the points and/or vouchers for future travel.
I have the British Airways Avios credit card and I use this to build up Avios points. With this I also get one companion voucher per year if I spend £10,000 on the card. I then use this to travel with friends. In December, I used points and my companion voucher to purchase 2 return flights from London to New York. Booking these flights online were coming up at £1200 per person. Using the voucher and points, we each paid £243. Saving a total of £957 per person! I’ll be honest, going direct with the airline doesnt bring you the cheapest deal from the offset but over time you can save yourself a lot of money. No matter what you do, there’s always a way to try and save yourself some pennies!
